Deeply Regional Japan

Photographic essay: The Central Highlands of Japan, an autumn journey

The ‘Central Highlands’ of Japan (中央高地) is a loosely knit term referring to the mountainous central part of Japan’s Honshu Island. The region is home to the highest peaks of Japan, including Mt Fuji (3776 m) and the Japan Alps. As part of regular track condition inspections for Deeply Regional Japan’s trekking tours, I had the privilege of spending time in Japan’s Central Highlands during the northern autumn of 2019. In these times of restricted international travel, I hope my photographs will provide you with a taste of this beautiful and fascinating region that has brought me so much joy since I discovered it over a quarter of a century ago.
